Preventative (Annual) Skin Exams Save Lives
Did you know skin cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer in the United States? According to the American Academy of Dermatology, one in five Americans will develop skin cancer by the age of 70. Research indicates that both non-melanoma, which includes squamous cell carcinoma and basal cell carcinoma, and melanoma skin cancer rates have more than doubled over the past couple of decades. Despite the increased incidence of skin cancers, advances in screening technology as well as treatment options have greatly improved leading to earlier detection and better outcomes.
Regular skin exams by your dermatologist can help find early pre-cancers and cancers. We are able to use specialized lights known as Dermatoscopes to look for certain characteristics that are indicative of pre-cancerous and cancerous lesions. Screenings take approximately ten minutes and are done in a private setting. Full body exams are preferred in order to ensure that all areas are visualized and no suspicious lesions are missed. If your provider is to find something that appears suspicious, a small biopsy is taken and sent to the lab for safety.
It is important to not only regularly follow with your dermatologist so they are able to detect changes in your moles and other lesions but to also to perform self skin exams as well. Changes observed may include new moles or moles that change in shape, color, size or become symptomatic (including bleeding, itching, burning, etc.).
It is recommended that full body skin exams are performed annually, however certain individuals at increased risk may need to be seen more frequently. Those at increased risk include those with a large number of moles, a strong family history and the immunosuppressed.
