Radiesse®

What is Radiesse®?

Radiesse® is a prescription-only dermal filler treatment manufactured by BioForm Medical. A licensed medical professional injects the dermal filler beneath the patient’s dermal-sub-cutaneous border. It’s used to fill in wrinkles and restore volume to the skin or to return mass to cheeks. This non-invasive procedure is an anti-aging treatment used to plump soft tissue. Patients in search of a fresh, natural-looking, and younger appearance like dermal filler treatments. Goodman Dermatology provides a complete array of medical, surgical, and cosmetic therapies used in the treatment of human skin diseases and conditions.

How is Radiesse® Different from Other Dermal Fillers on the Market?

This treatment is one of the most popular dermal fillers available. Some patients prefer the active ingredient, Calcium Hydroxyapatite (HCa5O13P3), to other hyaluronic acid-based fillers. HCa5O13P3 is naturally present in the body’s bones, teeth, and skin. This fact means that most patients aren’t allergic to the treatment, don’t react to it, and have no problems with it. Microscopic HCa5O13P3 particles are combined in a water base to make this dermal filler.

Is Radiesse® Safe for Me?

Radiesse® is an FDA-approved dermal filler approved for cosmetic injection. It’s non-toxic and clinical tests show that the material doesn’t migrate to other parts of the body. Like other dermal fillers, the treatment is gradually reabsorbed by the body. This treatment is contraindicated for use as a lip-filler. According to “Cosmetic Dermatology,” some studies show that migration of this filler from the lips may occur in some rare instances.

How Does Radiesse® Work?

Unlike some ‘instant’ dermal fillers, this treatment helps the body produce more of its own collagen and elastin. The aging process causes most people to make fewer of these fibers over time. Treated skin has greater tone and elasticity and looks more youthful. Although this filler does add volume immediately upon injection, its longer-term benefits attract most patients to the treatment. The potential of increased skin elasticity makes Radiesse® one of the most often requested dermal fillers available.

Am I a Good Candidate for Radiesse®?

Goodman Dermatology and providers consult with each patient about his or her goals for dermal filler use during an office appointment. There are many treatment options available. Complementary treatments, rather than a single dermal filler, may be recommended. A patient’s medical history, goals, and other factors are considered in the creation of his or her treatment plan. Goodman Dermatology will advise the patient about candidacy for any therapy or treatment at this time.

How Long Will a Radiesse® Treatment take?

Although the total treatment time can vary according to the number of areas to be treated (or the performance of complementary treatments during the patient’s visit, such as Botox® or laser therapies), most patients need about thirty minutes for the procedure.

Is Radiesse® Painful?

Most patients report little to no pain associated with this treatment. However, patients with sensitive skin are pleased to know that the FDA approved the addition of Lidocaine, a topical anesthetic ingredient, to the Radiesse® formula. This addition helps to reduce any pain associated with the injection of the dermal filler. An experienced, board-certified dermatologist is also adept in performing the treatment and the patient’s comfort is always a priority. Discuss any concerns about pain or sensitivity with Goodman Dermatology during the consultation.

What Side Effects Should I Expect After Radiesse®?

Some swelling, bruising or redness after the treatment is expected. The dermatology office staff will provide an ice pack to the patient before and after the procedure. It’s important to avoid intense physical activity for at least twenty-four hours after the procedure. Most usual daily activities can be resumed immediately after treatment. Some patients apply foundation or concealer cream after treatment to disguise any temporary effects.

Report any swelling, itching, or bruising that persists more than a few days or as recommended by the dermatologist.

What Treatment Products Should I Use After Radiesse®?

Goodman Dermatology and providers may recommend skin regimen products to the patient, such as a high SPF sunscreen or treatment product, to protect the skin after treatment.

How Long Will My Radiesse® Results Last? Are They Permanent?

Dermal filler treatments aren’t permanent and, though Radiesse® does help the body to produce its own elastin and collagen with the goal of increasing skin’s elasticity, no treatment halts the body’s aging process. Patients report that Radiesse® is one of the longest-lasting dermal fillers: one treatment can last a year or longer. Many dermatologists believe long-lived benefits plus stimulation of the body’s collagen and production makes this treatment ideal for the treatment of challenging deeper lines, wrinkles, or hollowed areas. While no dermal filler can permanently correct lines, wrinkles, or lost volume, Johns Hopkins University researchers believe it’s possible to delay or prevent some new signs of the skin’s aging process.
